Happy Birthday America

As we get ready to celebrate July 4th with our families and friends by barbecuing, watching fireworks, and enjoying an extra day off work, lets all remember WHY we celebrate, shall we?

The Fourth of July, is a federal holiday commemorating the adoption of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776, declaring independence from the Kingdom of Great Britain. What does this mean for us over 200 years later? Simply put: Freedom. A few key points in the Declaration of Independence that we all NEED to remember:

  • “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.” — This needs no further explanation.  It’s all right there, my friends.
  • “No taxation without representation.” — Our independence focused on this idea of everyone having a voice in government.
  • The Constitution contains the rare idea to have amendments because values and laws change over time.
  • The Bill of Rights kicked off America’s civil liberties. Throughout generations we’ve known that we have a freedom to practice religion, free speech, and other basic rights.

So as you drink your beverages, gnaw on some ribs, and watch fireworks displays, remember WHY we are celebrating.  Maybe you’ll wave that flag with a little more enthusiasm.
